Panel: Human Centered Technology - Innovating for Positive Socio-Technical Worlds

The Tech Ethics Video Series explores ethical issues regarding leadership, development, and the societal and global impact of emerging technologies. Leading experts offer concise, 10–15-minute introductions to a variety of topics. The talks are intended to explore ethical challenges and are designed to stimulate discussion in the classroom, workplace, and among individual users who interact with technology on a daily basis.

Responsible Technology: Building an Equitable Tech Future

In a world where technology shapes our social, political, and ecological conditions, risks associated with emerging technologies can lead to declining social trust. Responsible technology is a multidisciplinary field that responds to these challenges by working to align the development of new digital technologies with individual and societal values. Responsible technology strives to make the tech field more accessible and welcoming to people from diverse educational and career backgrounds, reflecting the wide range of social impacts and uses of the new technologies for broad societal benefit.

The rapid proliferation of surveillance and policing tech today reflects the danger of utilizing renegade AI systems that are potentially flawed and biased. This panel brought together experts on surveillance tech, civil rights, and responsible AI for a conversation meant to raise awareness around the current state of these systems. The panelists also discussed potential paths forward—including policies, oversight, and new practices—that will protect individual liberties, our communities, and the public at large.

Responsible Technology is a nascent field addressing the need to be thoughtful about the tools that we create, to help ensure that technology innovations are aligned with public interest. A key enabler of Responsible Technology is a diverse workforce - one that reflects our multifaceted world and represents the range of people impacted by technology. The tools we produce, and ultimately we as a society, benefit from their varied experiences, insights, and expertise. Introducing young people to the social and technical implications of AI - at the high school and community college level - is an important first step towards building responsible technology and creating an equitable future. In this presentation, I will discuss my work in this area, with groups such as AIedu.org, All Tech is Human, the SEMI Foundation, and Skyline Community College.

Series of panel discussions delving into the research, concepts and tools that help create open collaborations in a world of automated intelligent agents, algorithm-driven interactions, and machines that can learn what humans can’t explain. 2018
